School Libraries:Helpful Hints
The JCSP Libraries are welcoming comfortable exciting and dynamic learning spaces. Each Library is stocked with an exciting collection of carefully chosen books and other resources designed to entice and engage the reluctant teenager. These libraries are creative active learning spaces designed and run specifically to improve literacy levels and enhance the learning experience of JCSP students. While prioritising literacy development of JCSP students, the libraries also provide a service to the whole school including well stocked teacher resource sections.
The physical appearance of the library is very important. It must be bright, well-lit and have attractive colours on the walls, furniture and fittings. The layout should include study and browsing areas with appropriate seating and tables, a display area and facilities for group work.
Information Technology plays a mojor part in providing access to information in a school library and in disseminating information from the library. One of the most effective uses of IT in a school library is the automation of library routines and cataloguing procedures. By introducing an efficient library management system (LMS) you will improve the effectiveness of your library.
Once the library is up and running in a school, it is important to let it be known that it is there and what services it offers. It will also be appropriate to carry out promotional activities and to hold special events which will support the aims and objectives of the school library - to improve literacy levels and enhance the learning experience of JCSP students.

It is very important to ensure that the library looks well - it should be attractive and welcoming and a good display of books and non-book material is the key to providing that atmosphere. It is important that the shelves are tidy and well ordered so that the students can easily find what they want.
